DID YOU KNOW?

On July 23, 1922 it was reported by the New York Times that the Olympic had broken the world speed record for a passenger liner when she reached and maintained 27.81 knots for several hours. While she did not break the average speed record for a transatlantic crossing (and acquired the Blue Riband), it is still remarkable that the Olympic broke any speed records during her career.

THE WHITE STAR LINE 

The White Star Line had originally been a company serving Australia during the great Australian gold rush. The company went bankrupt as the gold rush faded, and on January 18th, 1868, Thomas Henry Ismay bought the company for £1,000. From this point forward, the White Star Line commissioned ships ships from their close partners, Harland and Wolff. Under this agreement H&W launched their first ship for White Star Line, Oceanic in August of 1870. Oceanic was truly ground-breaking, she was the first true super-liner, her size and design were practically never seen before. 
Soon after Oceanic's completion, identical sister-ships were built by Harland and Wolff for White Star Line, Atlantic, Baltic and Republic.) .
