THE ALBION HOUSE

Albion House was designed by respected architects Richard Norman Shaw and James Francis Doyle. The iconic building was constructed between 1896 to 1898 for the Ismay, Imrie and Company shipping company, which later became the White Star Line. The building, situated on the corner of James Street and The Strand, was similar in design to Shaw's earlier work, the former New Scotland Yard building in London, offering his synonymous Grand Hall and Grand Staircase.

CUNARD LINE

In 1840 the majority of the world's deep sea trade was still carried in sailing ships. Steamships were proving themselves in coastal services, but there were few who would commit untried craft to the high seas.
The “Britannia”, and her sister ships, the first regular Atlantic steamship service, were true pioneers. The “Britannia” was a wooden paddle steamer of 1,150 tons; her hull had a length of 207 feet. The “Britannia” could carry 115 passengers and 225 tons of cargo at a speed of 9 knots.

"THE MOTORSHIP LOOK"

The squat Harland and Wolff "motorship look" brought with it tremendous economies. Mr. F. E. Rebbeck, managing director of the Belfast shipyard, stated on Britannic's trial voyage that she would carry one ton one mile on as much as could be held in a thimble. The most economical steamer designed at the same time would need about fifty per cent more fuel and there was an enormous saving, too, in the dead weight of the machinery.

THE WHITE STAR LINE

The White Star Line had originally been a company serving Australia during the great Australian gold rush. The company went bankrupt as the gold rush faded, and on January 18th, 1868, Thomas Henry Ismay bought the company for £1,000. From this point forward, the White Star Line would commission ships ships from their close partners, Harland and Wolff. "WHITE STAR BUFF"

The color applied to White Star Liners’ funnels has come to be known in the Ocean Liner Community as “White Star Buff” (WSB). Funnel colors of shipping lines were their signature colors and aided in their identification.

DID YOU KNOW?

The designs for the White Star sisterships Britannic and Georgic were among the most significant ever created in the company’s history.

Their revolutionary choice of engine design and low squat funnels heralded a new era in ocean travel.

Georgic's interiors, designed in collaboration with Waring & Gillow, introduced the Art Deco movement to the otherwise conservative White Star Line. Bold colours, geometric shapes and streamlined looks, were the perfect antidote to the Great Depression sweeping the world’s economies.
